Error 014.40 on a TCL Roku TV is a password or access restriction error

TCL TVs Error 014.40

Error 014.40 on a TCL Roku TV is a password or access restriction error. Unlike the signal-strength sub-codes (014.20, 014.30, 014.50), Error 014.40 indicates that the wireless signal is adequate — the problem is that the TV cannot authenticate with the network, most commonly because the password entered is incorrect or the router has access restrictions in place.

What Error 014.40 Means

Error 014.40 appears when the TV successfully detects the Wi-Fi network and attempts to join it with the provided password, but authentication fails. The router either rejects the password or blocks the TV’s MAC address from connecting. In either case, the TV cannot complete the connection process.

Common Causes of Error 014.40

  • Incorrect Wi-Fi password — The most common cause. Passwords are case-sensitive; a single mistyped character causes authentication to fail.
  • Recently changed router password — If the router password was updated after the TV was last connected, the saved password on the TV is now wrong.
  • MAC address filtering enabled — The router is configured to only allow specific devices to connect, and the TV’s MAC address is not on the approved list.
  • WPA/WPA2/WPA3 compatibility issue — Some older TCL TV models do not support WPA3, and routers set to WPA3-only mode will reject the TV’s connection.
  • Router authentication server issue — On enterprise networks using RADIUS authentication, the server may be rejecting the TV’s credentials.

How to Fix Error 014.40

Step 1: Re-enter the Wi-Fi password carefully. In the TV’s network settings, forget the network and reconnect, typing the password slowly and verifying each character.

Step 2: Confirm the exact password on the router admin page (usually accessed at 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1). Copy it precisely, noting capital letters, numbers, and special characters.

Step 3: On the router, navigate to the wireless security settings and check whether MAC address filtering is enabled. If it is, add the TV’s wireless MAC address to the allowed list. Find the TV’s MAC address under Settings → Network → About → Wireless MAC Address.

Step 4: Check the router’s Wi-Fi security mode. If set to WPA3-only, change it to WPA2/WPA3 mixed mode or WPA2 for compatibility.

Step 5: Restart both the router and TV and reattempt the connection.
