Hisense TV Error Code E203: HDCP Authentication Error
Error code E203 on a Hisense TV indicates an HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) authentication failure. This is a specific type of HDMI error that occurs when the TV and the connected device cannot successfully complete the copy protection handshake required to display protected content.
What Is HDCP?
HDCP is a mandatory copy protection standard used across the consumer electronics industry. It ensures that premium content — such as 4K Blu-ray, streaming in 4K, or content from pay TV providers — cannot be easily duplicated as it travels between devices. Both the source device and the display must support and successfully negotiate the same version of HDCP for the content to be displayed.
Why E203 Appears
A HDCP version mismatch is the most common cause. HDCP has gone through several versions (1.4, 2.2, 2.3), and both devices must support a common version. If a 4K streaming device requires HDCP 2.2 and the TV’s HDMI port only supports HDCP 1.4, the handshake will fail.
HDCP errors can also be caused by a faulty or low-quality HDMI cable that does not properly transmit the authentication data, or by a glitch in the authentication process that can be resolved with a simple restart.
Fixing E203
Restart Both Devices Power off both the TV and the connected device completely. Unplug them from the wall, wait 30 seconds, then reconnect and power them back on. This forces a fresh HDCP authentication attempt and resolves the majority of E203 errors.
Replace the HDMI Cable Use a Premium High Speed HDMI cable certified for HDCP 2.2. Many budget HDMI cables do not correctly transmit HDCP authentication data.
Connect to the Correct HDMI Port On most Hisense TVs, only certain HDMI ports support HDCP 2.2. Check your TV’s manual to identify the appropriate port for 4K protected content — it is often labeled “HDMI 2” or “ARC.”
Check Source Device Settings Some devices allow you to select the HDCP version in their settings. Setting it to HDCP 1.4 can sometimes resolve compatibility issues with older TVs.
Update Firmware Ensure both the TV and the source device are running current firmware, as HDCP-related bugs are frequently addressed in updates.
