Hisense TV Error Code E202: HDMI Signal Format Not Supported

Error code E202 on a Hisense TV indicates that a signal is being received from the connected HDMI device, but the format, resolution, or frame rate of that signal is not supported by the TV or the specific HDMI port being used.

What E202 Means

Unlike E201, which signals no input at all, E202 confirms that the TV can detect a connected device but cannot interpret or display the signal it is sending. This is a compatibility issue between the output settings of the source device and the input capabilities of the TV.

Common Causes

The connected device may be set to output at a resolution beyond the TV’s maximum capability — for example, outputting 8K on a 4K TV. Similarly, an unusually high refresh rate (such as 240Hz) on a port that only supports 60Hz, or an HDR format not supported by the TV’s specific HDMI port, can trigger E202.

On some Hisense models, only specific HDMI ports support enhanced features like 4K 120Hz or HDMI 2.1 — trying to use these features on a standard port will result in E202.

Solutions

Lower the Output Resolution On the source device, reduce the video output resolution and refresh rate. Start with 1080p at 60Hz as a baseline and work upward to find the highest settings your TV’s port supports.

Check Which Ports Support Which Specifications Refer to your TV’s manual or the Hisense website to identify which HDMI ports support which specifications. On most Hisense 4K TVs, HDMI 2 or HDMI 3 supports the highest specifications.

Disable HDR on the Source Device If the TV does not support the specific HDR format being output (such as Dolby Vision on a TV that only supports HDR10), disable HDR in the source device’s display settings.

Update the TV Firmware New firmware versions sometimes add support for additional signal formats. Check for updates via Settings > Support > System Update.
