Error 017 on a TCL Roku TV indicates that the TV is receiving a poor wireless signal from the router during active use. Unlike 014.x errors (which occur when trying to connect), Error 017 appears while the TV is already connected and attempting to stream — meaning the signal has weakened after the initial connection was established.
What Error 017 Means
Error 017 is a runtime signal quality warning. The TV successfully connected to Wi-Fi, but the signal quality has subsequently dropped below the level required to maintain reliable streaming. This is often caused by the TV being at the edge of the router’s effective range, interference that has increased (such as a neighbouring device turning on), or the router being temporarily overloaded.

- Marginal signal strength — The TV is at the outer edge of the router’s range; streaming requires more consistent signal than simply connecting.
- Increased interference — A microwave, cordless phone, or neighbouring Wi-Fi network has introduced interference that degraded signal quality.
- Router overload — Many devices using the same router simultaneously can reduce effective bandwidth and signal quality per device.
- Physical obstruction change — A new piece of furniture, appliance, or other object placed between the TV and router is blocking the signal.
- 5 GHz instability — Streaming on 5 GHz at marginal range is particularly susceptible to quality drops.
How to Fix Error 017
Step 1: Follow the on-screen instructions to reconsider TV and router placement. Moving either device even a small distance can significantly improve signal quality.
Step 2: Restart both the router and TV to re-establish the connection at full strength.
Step 3: Switch from 5 GHz to 2.4 GHz for a more stable connection at the cost of speed — for most streaming, 2.4 GHz is more than sufficient.
Step 4: Reduce the number of devices using the Wi-Fi network simultaneously.
Step 5: Install a Wi-Fi range extender near the TV to boost signal quality at that location.
